Babar Azam Biography
Babar Azam’s meteoric rise in cricket is a testament to his innate skill and dedication. He emerged as a right-hand, top-order batsman with a spectacular showing in 2016, notching three consecutive ODI centuries against West Indies. At just 22, he impressed with a 90 in only his third Test match in Hamilton.
Originating in Lahore and linked to the cricketing lineage of the Akmal brothers, Babar Azam began his journey in age-group cricket. He showcased his prowess globally in the under-15 World Championship in 2008 and under-19 World Cups in 2010 and 2012, where he stood out as Pakistan’s top run-scorer.
Azam’s remarkable rise continued as he carved a niche in international cricket. Debuting in 2015 during Pakistan’s home ODI series against Zimbabwe, he navigated the limited international fixtures due to security concerns.
Thriving in ODIs with three centuries against West Indies, he secured a spot in the Test squad. Azam embraced the challenge, cementing his role as stalwarts like Younis Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq phased out.
Azam’s journey transformed him into Pakistan’s premier batsman and a cricketing icon. His achievements include being the second-fastest to 2000 ODI runs and 1000 T20I runs. Notable is his World Cup century against New Zealand in a high-stakes match. While his Test journey initially differed, Azam’s consistent progress established him as a key Test batsman since 2018.
Beyond the field, Azam’s leadership shines. As T20I and ODI captain since 2019, and Test captain since 2021, he exemplifies progressive thinking while maintaining personal form.
