Fast bowler Ali Khan, USA’s first globetrotting T20 star, recently voiced his concerns regarding the lack of preparation by USA Cricket leading up to the men’s T20 World Cup. At an ICC promotional event in Dallas, marking the 100-day countdown to the tournament, Khan urged the governing body to intensify the team’s preparations and select the best available squad for their inaugural World Cup appearance.

Expressing Urgency

Speaking passionately at the event, Khan emphasized the critical need for immediate action, stating, “We don’t have much time, and whoever is in charge needs to step it up. We need to play some cricket and play as a team because the team has to get together.”

A Call for Comprehensive Preparation

Khan stressed the importance of training camps and facing quality oppositions to hone the team’s skills. He emphasized, “You have to play someone better than you, especially leading into the World Cup. If you want to get good results, you need to have good preparation behind it.

Lack of Game Time

The dissatisfaction with USA Cricket’s preparation is understandable, considering the team’s last T20I appearance in July 2022. In contrast, associate counterparts like Nepal, Canada, UAE, Netherlands, and Scotland have played over 15 T20Is each by February 2024, underscoring the disparity in preparation.

Selection Dilemma

Khan highlighted the contentious issue of squad selection, particularly regarding the inclusion of new faces. Despite eligible players like Shehan Jayasuriya, Corey Anderson, and others, uncertainty looms over their participation in the World Cup squad. This uncertainty has been exacerbated by the board’s reluctance to engage with players until the selection of zonal squads.

Hopeful Outlook

Despite the challenges, Khan remains optimistic about the selectors’ decision, expressing faith in their ability to choose the best team. “If you are competing in an event like a cricket world cup, you have to bring your best players,” Khan remarked, trusting the selectors to make the right choices.

As the T20 World Cup approaches, Ali Khan’s call for enhanced preparation resonates deeply within the USA Cricket community. With time ticking away, the urgency to ramp up training and finalize the squad intensifies. The hopes and aspirations of a nation rest on the shoulders of these cricketers, and their journey to the World Cup is not just about competing but leaving a lasting impact on the global stage.
