Fakhar Zaman Career Highlights
Fakhar Zaman, born in the cricket-rich region of Mardan, follows in the footsteps of legendary Pakistani cricketer Younis Khan. Despite his remarkable talent, he spent over five years on the domestic circuit with little attention. Zaman’s unique batting style, characterized by an elevated backlift, hinges on impeccable timing. His domestic averages of 42 in first-class cricket and 49 in List-A matches are testaments to his prowess.
Zaman’s turning point came during the Quaid-e-Azam trophy in the 2016-17 season. Scoring 663 runs at an average of 51, including a monumental 170 in the final’s second innings, he showcased his potential. His prolific form earned him a spot in the Lahore Qalandars for the Pakistan Super League (PSL). His elegance and powerful strokes were evident in a 33-ball 56 against Karachi.
This success paved his way to Pakistan’s T20I squad for the West Indies tour, making his debut in Port of Spain. Zaman’s initial T20I outings yielded 26 runs. However, his One-Day International (ODI) debut in the 2017 Champions Trophy marked a turning point. With scores of 31, 50, 57, and a match-winning 114 in his first four ODI innings, he injected much-needed dynamism into Pakistan’s batting. His first ODI century earned him the Player-of-the-Match award in the final, setting up a total of 338, well beyond India’s reach.
