Shakib Al Hasan Leads Bangla Tigers in Asia Cup and World Cup 2023

Shakib Al Hassan

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has chosen veteran allrounder Shakib Al Hasan as the new ODI captain for both the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 and the ICC World Cup 2023. Shakib has overtaken Litton Das to lead the Bangla Tigers in ODIs. Allrounder Mehidy Hasan was also a strong contender for the position.

Both Shakib Al Hasan and Litton were the top contenders for the new ODI captaincy, following Tamim Iqbal’s resignation from the role earlier this month. Due to a back injury that has ruled him out of the Asia Cup 2023, the veteran opening batsman also stepped down as captain to ensure the team’s proper preparation for the World Cup.

One day before the deadline to announce the Asia Cup squad, Bangladesh has confirmed Shakib as their new captain.

Although everyone expected the announcement on Monday (August 7) after an emergency meeting, BCB decided to postpone it to take the candidates’ opinions into consideration.

From the outset, Shakib Al Hasan was the favorite, but there were concerns about whether he would accept the additional responsibility given that he already leads the Test and T20I teams.

Earlier this week, Jalal Yunus, the BCB’s cricket operations chairman, stated, “After today’s emergency meeting, the board has tasked the president with discussing the captaincy roles with the candidates by August 12. The president will listen to the candidates’ preferences on leading in different formats and whether they agree with it or not. We want to hear directly from the candidates about their feelings regarding captaining the red and white-ball teams.”

As reported by Cricbuzz, Shakib Al Hasan has now been confirmed as the Bangladesh captain for both the Asia Cup and the World Cup. As one of Bangladesh’s most accomplished cricketers, the seasoned all-rounder is no stranger to leading the team in the ODI format.

He has previously captained the team in 50 ODIs, during which he scored 1547 runs and took 68 wickets in the 50-over format.
