Shubman Gill Introduction
Shubman Gill, a right-hand top-order batsman hailing from Punjab, is renowned for his ability to accumulate substantial runs. He first gained prominence when he was appointed vice-captain of the India Under-19 side for the 2018 World Cup. Before that, he made his debut in first-class cricket for Punjab in the Ranji Trophy in late 2017, where he notched a half-century and followed it up with an aggressive 129 in the next match.
Gill’s inclusion in Rahul Dravid’s plans for the Under-19 World Cup was consistent, and he often played in an age-group category above his own. In 2014, he made headlines by scoring a remarkable 351 in Punjab’s Inter-District Under-16 tournament, alongside sharing a record-breaking opening partnership of 587 runs with Nirmal Singh. His debut in the Vijay Merchant Trophy for Punjab’s Under-16 state team was marked by an unbeaten double-century.
Awards and Recognition
In recognition of his exceptional talent, Shubman Gill received the BCCI award for the best junior cricketer for two consecutive years, 2013-14 and 2014-15. Upon his selection for the national Under-19 team, Gill’s stellar performance immediately became evident. He amassed 351 runs in four innings during the Youth ODI series against England at home, thereby earning him the title of Man of the Series. Furthermore, his brilliance continued during the reciprocal tour in England. Once again, he emerged as the top scorer with 278 runs in four innings, leading India to victory in both series.
IPL Journey
While still in New Zealand for the 2018 World Cup, Shubman Gill’s fortunes took a further upswing as he was picked by the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for a substantial sum of INR 1.8 crore (approximately USD 281,000) in the IPL auction.
