Decoding BCCI Latest Central Contracts: Who’s In, Who’s Out?

BCCI Unveils Revised Cricket Contracts

BCCI Central Contracts 2023-24: The Roster Shuffle

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has unveiled its roster of centrally contracted players for the upcoming 2023-24 season. This announcement brings with it a flurry of changes, surprises, and exclusions, shaping the landscape for Indian cricket in the months ahead.

Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan Omitted

Two notable omissions from the 30-member list are Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan. Previously holding Grade B and Grade C contracts, respectively, both players find themselves excluded this season. The BCCI clarified that their exclusion was a result of considerations made during the latest round of recommendations. Additionally, the board emphasized the importance of prioritizing participation in domestic cricket during periods when players are not representing the national team.

Elevations and Retentions

In contrast, several players have seen elevations and retentions in their contract grades. KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, and Mohammed Siraj have been promoted to Grade A, reflecting their consistent performances. Rishabh Pant, despite missing a significant portion of the previous season due to injury, finds himself in Grade B this time. Notable stalwarts like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, and Ravindra Jadeja retain their coveted Grade A+ contracts.

Changes in Contract Categories

Axar Patel moves from Grade A to Grade B, while Kuldeep Yadav sees an elevation from Grade C to Grade B. Newcomer Yashasvi Jaiswal joins the Grade B roster as well. However, Cheteshwar Pujara doesn’t secure a contract this season, having been in Grade B previously.

Expansion of Grade C

The Grade C category witnesses significant expansion, accommodating 15 players, up from the previous season’s 11. Among the new inclusions are promising talents like Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shivam Dube, and Ravi Bishnoi. However, seasoned campaigners like Umesh Yadav, Shikhar Dhawan, and Yuzvendra Chahal face exclusion.

Criteria and New Additions

The selection committee introduces a new category – Fast Bowling contracts – aimed at recognizing and nurturing fast bowling talent in India. Notable inclusions in this category include Akash Deep and Umran Malik.

Looking Ahead

The annual contracts for the 2023-24 season come into effect from October 1, 2023, to September 30, 2024. Players will be automatically included in Grade C based on their performance in international matches within this period.

In conclusion, BCCI’s latest central contracts herald a mix of continuity, evolution, and opportunities for emerging talent. As the cricketing season unfolds, all eyes will be on how these contractual decisions translate into on-field performances and the future trajectory of Indian cricket.
