Josh Hazlewood Career Highlights
Josh Hazlewood, a towering and precise fast bowler, has cemented his place in Australia’s Test attack since his debut in December 2014. His baggy green came after years of anticipation, as Hazlewood had been a highly regarded talent for long. He made his mark as the youngest fast bowler selected by New South Wales at 17, and soon after, he played his first one-day international at 19 against England. Hazlewood’s Test debut came four years later, demonstrating his growth as he added significant strength to his 196cm frame.
Growing up idolizing Glenn McGrath, Hazlewood received a rookie state contract in 2008-09 while still in year 12 in Tamworth, New South Wales. His early international career mirrored McGrath’s, with both making their Test debuts at 23. Hazlewood reached 100 Test wickets in 46 innings, just one inning slower than his idol. He was once dropped from the side due to fatigue but came back stronger, contributing to Australia’s 4-0 Ashes victory in 2017-18.
Following leadership changes post the Newlands ball-tampering scandal, he was named joint vice-captain of the Test team. A back issue sidelined him for a UAE tour, and another back injury post the 2018-19 home series against India led to him missing the World Cup. However, he played a crucial role in retaining the Ashes with a pivotal wicket at Old Trafford.
