Bhuvneshwar Kumar Biography
At the time of his India debut in 2012, Bhuvneshwar Kumar seemed to be the answer to the side’s fast-bowling scarcity. Despite his middling pace, he possessed the ability to swing the ball both ways and deliver a devastating inswinger. He began his T20I career by dismissing Nasir Jamshed with his first over, followed by dismissing Mohammad Hafeez with his first ODI delivery. His debut Test series against Australia in 2013 witnessed India’s first whitewash win in a four-Test series, where he played a significant role.
Bhuvneshwar showcased his expertise in line and length at an early age, evident when he dismissed Sachin Tendulkar for his first duck in domestic first-class cricket during the 2008-09 Ranji Trophy final. His batting prowess was also displayed when he scored 128 while batting at No. 8 in the 2012-13 Duleep Trophy semi-final.
While injuries posed challenges in his Test appearances, Bhuvneshwar thrived in white-ball cricket. His partnership with Jasprit Bumrah, coupled with his ability to execute slower balls and yorkers, made him India’s go-to bowler during the death overs. His performance was highlighted by taking five wickets in a T20I against South Africa in Johannesburg in February 2018. In 2022, he achieved even greater success, picking up 5 for 4 against Afghanistan in the Asia Cup.
Bhuvneshwar’s proficiency in white-ball cricket mirrored his accomplishments in the IPL. After joining Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2014, he became a pivotal player in their powerplay and death bowling, securing the purple cap for the highest wicket-taker in 2016 and 2017. Despite a decline in later seasons, he remains the franchise’s all-time leading wicket-taker.
